To replace the new cooling fan temperature switches, first ensure the engine is turned off and the water in the engine radiator has cooled to room temperature. Avoid exposing the installed components to external high heat sources, and take care not to sprinkling water on surrounding auto parts during the installation process.
Begin by locating the cooling fan switch near the thermostat housing on the left side of the engine, behind the distributor assembly. The switch wire colors should be green and black. Disconnect the wire terminal from the cooling fan switch, and allow the engine to reach a coolant temperature of 196-203°F (91-95°C).
Using a suitable ohmmeter or continuity tester, check for continuity between the two fan switch terminals. The fan switch should have continuity (switch closed) at the above temperatures. The switch should have no continuity (switch open) when the temperature drops between 5-15°F (3-8°C) from the temperature at which the switch first had continuity (switch closed).
If the switch does not operate within the specified temperature range, allow the engine to cool below 100°F (37°C) and replace the switch. Caution should be exercised, as submerging the electric cooling fan switch below the threads could potentially damage the component. Additionally, coolant must be used for this test, as the boiling point of water is below the temperature required for testing some of the sensors. Perform this procedure in a safe and well-ventilated area, and avoid breathing any fumes from the heated coolant. Wear eye protection and use care to not come in contact with any of the heated components. Do not use a heating device that produces an open flame.
The fan thermostat temperature switch is made of high-quality brass, ensuring anti-corrosion properties and maximum strength for long-lasting usage. It activates the electric engine cooling fan when the temperature reaches 185 degrees and turns off at approximately 175 degrees. The switch features a 3/8" NPT male pipe thread and is also equipped with a 1/2" NPT male to 3/8" NPT female bushing for different size scenarios, making it easy to use and a direct replacement part for the original blower motor resistor. This fan thermostat temperature switch is compatible with a wide range of engines, including 265, 283, 305, 307, 327, 350, 383, 400, 396, 402, 427, 454, 472, 502, 260, 289, 302, 351W, 347, 352, 360, 390, 406, 427, 428, 429, 460, 351C, 351M, 400M, 273, 318, 340, 360, 361, 383, 400, 413, 426W, 440, 455, 330, and 326.
